David Heden
Founder & CIO
David Heden holds the Chartered CMT and CIM (Chartered Investment Manager) designations and brings over 25 years of experience in Canada’s alternative investment industry.
He began his career in 1998 at K2 and Associates Investment Management, specializing in merger arbitrage. Over 13 years, he advanced to Managing Director, leading the firm’s distressed debt and mezzanine lending practices. In 2012, he founded HGC Investment Management, where he served in multiple roles, including Chief Investment Officer, CEO, and Portfolio Manager. Under his leadership, HGC became a recognized leader in SPAC and merger arbitrage strategies, managing over $1 billion and earning AIMA’s Best Overall Canadian Hedge Fund in 2023. David remains a significant shareholder and director of the firm.
In 2020, David founded 5D Ventures, integrating his investment expertise with a philanthropic and impact-focused mission. Seeded with an initial $50 million personal commitment, 5D Ventures pioneers the concept of Venture Philanthropy, funding initiatives in immersive wellness, longevity, regenerative farming, and Indigenous healing practices.
David has founded and supported several purpose-driven ventures, including Dimensions Retreats, reflecting his commitment to conscious investment and community well-being. He is also a lead investor and advisor to emerging companies such as Holos Global and Abroad, which align with his focus on innovation in wellness and sustainability. His philanthropic leadership has been recognized with the Alan White Award for Indigenous Leadership. In addition, David brings extensive board experience across public and private sectors, having served with Enven (acquired for over $1 billion), Energy Partners, Dimensions, Rooster Petroleum, and Probe Resources.
He divides his time between Toronto, where he is an engaged father, and Nosara, Costa Rica, where he founded the Mama Montana permaculture community. His personal interests include Kundalini Yoga, Transcendental Meditation, and Vedic studies.
