The Forest of Abundance
Impact Type: Mission-Driven Equity | Contribution: $125,000.00
Overlooking the town of Nosara, The Forest of Abundance at Mama Montana is a living, regenerative garden rooted in permaculture and biodiversity. Located at Finca San Juan, the garden began as a personal project by David Heden, owner and founder of 5D Ventures, as an expression of his vision for greater self-sufficiency, resilience, and land stewardship.
What began as an intimate experiment in regeneration has evolved into a thriving, diversified ecosystem. Today, the gardens encompass nearly 400 distinct plant varieties, including 133 fruit tree varieties, 76 food crops, 69 medicinal and culinary herbs, and 100 ornamental species, alongside native and naturalized plants that strengthen biodiversity and soil health. This diversity is intentional, designed to mirror natural forest systems while producing nourishment year-round.
The project is stewarded by Daniel Hewison, whose work bridges cultivation and cuisine. He nourishes the land as thoughtfully as he nourishes people, connecting gardens directly to the table, crafting seasonal meals, and expressing the story of the land through food. Under his care, The Forest of Abundance has become a landscape where food and medicine thrive alongside wildlife, beauty, and intention.
This initiative stands as a tangible, small-scale reflection of 5D Ventures’ commitment to regenerative models that honour land, community, and long-term resilience. It is both a working ecosystem and a quiet invitation: to rethink how we grow food, how we steward resources, and how abundance can be cultivated in harmony with nature.
In addition to cultivation, the garden serves as a space for tours, workshops, and hands-on education, with a longer-term vision to continue expanding the gardens and host farm-to-table gatherings, deepening community engagement through food, learning, and shared experience.
